Mayor Emmanuel announced the Chicago Leadership Collaborative (CLC) in November 2011 with the mission to recruit, train, support and retain effective principals, in order to create a pipeline of highly qualified leaders to meet the District's needs well into the future.

The (CLC) is a unique partnership between the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) and leading principal development programs. It provides the District with unprecedented capacity to develop, attract and retain high-performing principals from internal and external sources, making Chicago a "destination of choice" for aspiring urban school leaders.

The CLC is one of the recommended routes to principalship in the District, and prepares participants to lead a school after a rigorous one-year internship as a leader in a school serving CPS students.

Partner Organizations

Ten external providers comprise the CLC – Chicago State University, DePaul University, Dominican University, Loyola University Chicago, National Louis University, New Leaders, Northeastern Illinois University, Teach for America (in conjunction with Harvard University), University of Illinois Chicago, and University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. These organizations were selected for their successful track records in developing principal leaders, their rigorous system to recruit and select high-potential candidates, and program alignment to the CPS Principal Competencies.

CLC Training

CLC participants enter into a year-long internship – either in a full-time Resident Principal position or while staying in their current position - and are mentored by high-performing principals in the District for a full school year. This experience provides our aspiring principals with hands-on, real-world experience designed to help them prepare to enter a school ready to lead that school toward success from day one and to become proficient in the CPS Principal Competencies:

Because of this focused and rigorous internship experience, CLC aspiring principals are typically prepared to take the CPS Principal Eligibility process by the end of their internship.
